Different Types of Pollen

رحمه اللهBy: Ibn-ul-Qayyim

Talas (enthusiasm) is the pollen of Imaan.  When there is Talas (enthusiasm) and Imaan, they result in good actions.

Good expectations in Allah is the pollen of beseeching Allah.  When one’s cries to Allah are pollinated with good expectations in Him, it will result in acceptance of one’s Du’aa.

Khashya (fear) is the pollen of Mahabba (love).  The combined effect of the two is obedience to the commands of Allah and abstinence from the things which He prohibited.

Sabr (patience) is the pollen of Yaqeen (conviction).  The person who possesses these two qualities will be blessed with Imaamat (leadership) in Deen.  Allah Ta’ala says:  “When they exercised patience and had conviction in Our signs, We made them leaders who guided others with Our command.”  (Surah As-Sajdah, Verse 24)

Following the Rasool e in the correct manner is the pollen of Ikhlaas (sincerity).  When a man with Ikhlaas (sincerity) follows the Rasool e in the correct manner, his actions is accepted.

‘Amal is the pollen of ‘Ilm.  When ‘Ilm is pollinated with ‘Amal, the result is success and good fortune.  However, there is no benefit in any one of them without the other.

Hilm (tolerance) is also the pollen of ‘Ilm.  When Hilm (tolerance) pollinates ‘Ilm, people benefit from the ‘Aalim’s knowledge and he gains leadership in the Dunyaa and the Aakhirah.  On the contrary, a person who possesses any one of them will neither benefit the people nor will they take any benefit from him.

‘Azeemah (determination) is the pollen of Baseerah (wisdom).  A man who possesses both these qualities will be blessed with goodness in the Dunyaa and the Aakhirah and his determination will take him to every lofty status.  Failure to achieve perfection is either due to lack of wisdom or lack of determination.

Noble goals are the pollen of a sound mind.  Just as absence of both results in deprivation of all goodness, their presence results in various types of goodness.

Sound judgement is the pollen of bravery.  The fruit of sound judgement and bravery is victory and success and the harms of not possessing them is failure and defeat.  Similarly, cowardice is the result of sound judgement without bravery and destruction is the result of bravery without sound judgement.

Sabr (patience) is the pollen of Baseerah (wisdom) too.  Hence there is always Khair (good) in possessing both of them.  Hasan (Al-Basri R.A.A.) said:  “If you want to see a wise man who has no Sabr, you will see him.  If you want to see a man who has Sabr but no wisdom, you will see him.  However, if you see a man with Sabr and wisdom, then that is a man!”

Naseehah (desiring good for others) is the pollen of the ‘Aql (intellect).  The strength of one’s ‘Aql depends on the strength of one’s good desires for others.

Tadhakkur (taking lesson) and Tafakkur (pondering) are pollen for each other.  The combination of the two results in abstinence from the Dunyaa and inclination to the Aakhirah.

Taqwa is the pollen of Tawakkul; steadfastness on the straight path is their fruit.

The pollen of one’s preparation (for death and the Aakhirah) is consciousness of the shortness of life.  Thus there will be Khair (good) if you inculcate these two qualities.  However, there will be disaster if you inculcate only one of them.

A correct Niyyah (intention) is the pollen of a high ambition.  The servant can only reach his goal if he has a high ambition and a correct intention.
